Realizing Your Highest Potential: 7 Ways to Move Through Obstacles with Grace
Sunday, March 1st, 2009Obstacles and roadblocks — we know they are a fact of life. In fact, when you think about it, if you haven’t faced a challenge or roadblock lately, you probably haven’t stepped outside of your comfort zone. You are probably not pursuing any big goals. Running into roadblocks is a natural part of any worthwhile endeavor, and confirms for you that you are playing a big game!
So let’s say you are hitting some roadblocks and being challenged on your way to winning at your big game. What to do? Here are 7 quick ideas that can help you to smooth out the bumps you will encounter.
- Name it. Identify what is in your way and write it down, then using Byron Katie’s great question, ask “Is it true?” Sometimes we put a name and meaning to something and when we really think about it, it is really what we wanted all along – it just doesn’t look like we imagined it, or planned it to look. Which leads to number two…….
- Be Flexible. Be open to things happening in a different way than you planned. Hitting a roadblock is a perfect time to re-assess where you are. It is a check point to help you identify what your next moves should be. Look for other ways of reaching and accomplishing your goals, incorporating new ideas, or even changing direction. Ask yourself “If I was someone else whom I trusted, what advice would I give me right now?” Be ready to try something new, and be prepared for it to turn out to be better than your original idea!
- Embrace the scariness. Changing gears and being open to new ways of doing things can be scary. Again, living and achieving to your highest potential means being out of your comfort zone. In the book Jump and the Net Will Appear, author Robin Crow advises that pushing yourself to the edge might help you achieve more, earn more, or do more, and the lessons you’ll learn will be priceless. He also tells us that if you are afraid of doing something, then it is probably exactly what you should be doing!
- During challenging moments, re-center on your values. Think back and ask yourself “what was my original purpose here?” Remind and re-excite yourself about your mission and all of the possibility that brings! Picture yourself back where you were when you first made your plans. Where were you when you first got your idea? How far have you already come? What’s important about continuing?
- Examine unsupportive beliefs. Name them and write them down. Ask yourself “If I had the opposite beliefs, what would they be?” Write them down, too, on a separate piece of paper. Throw away the unsupportive beliefs in a ceremonial way! As I coach, I help my clients to replace unsupportive beliefs with new supportive ones! You can start by looking at the list of opposite beliefs and reading them aloud two, five, ten times per day!
- Uplift yourself! One great way is to read something that gives you hope and inspiration. Think of something that has done this for you in the past, or go to the nearest book store- the shelves are brimming with great choices. Self help classics are always perfect for the job! When you are feeling challenged or frustrated you are operating from your lower power. Stopping to read something uplifting, or enjoying something that you are passionate about puts you into a different mode — your higher power. This is the most advantageous place to come from to solve and create!
- Ask for help! No surprise that this is last on the list — it is usually the last thing we do! Whether we don’t want to admit needing help, or don’t want to bother anyone — whatever our reason for hesitating — this is usually what we most need to do. We are surrounded by people who can help us, if only we are willing to look! Maybe you are a person who does delegate and ask for help easily. So, how can you take this to a new level? Asking for divine guidance, turning the challenge over to God or asking God to help support you and give you strength, asking the Universe to allow the grace for you to receive the answers you are looking for — these are all examples of ways this can be done. We are all here on Earth to be in community with one another — we are our own best resource!
Just start with one thing on this list. Although simple, these ideas can give you the spark you need to move forward in the most powerful way! So instead of trying to power through your next road block with force — here’s to you moving thorough it smoothly, gracefully and quickly! Believe it!
