Just Leave Everything to Me

By Kim Dubrul

Dolly Levi is on my mind a lot — having recently finished a run on the Flynn Center stage (with a wonderful Lyric Theatre cast and crew!) of Hello Dolly!

Though I love Broadway shows, Dolly’s story was not one I was familiar with.  I decided to watch the movie version with Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthau.  The songs in the movie version differ a little from the Broadway show, but the theme is still the same!  Very empowering and inspiring!  As a side note, I would recommend anyone who wants a little uplifting in their lives to rent and watch the movie right away!

One of the first songs in the movie is called Just Leave Everything to Me, sung by Dolly. Dolly shows herself as a person who is taking charge of her destiny and inspiring and helping others to do the same. She is not content to just watch life go by. As she describes herself in the song she has “always been a woman who arranges things…”  She goes on to describe a VAST array of talents and accomplishments, including pierced ears re-plugged and varicose veins reduced!!  She is busy arranging things for herself and for others.

Here are just a few wise lessons I learn from Dolly’s example:

  1. Think big! Decide what you want. The sky’s the limit and anything is possible. She is fearless and determined. Listen to yourself and don’t let anyone else determine your fate!  She feels secure in leaning on and trusting in herself.
  2. Take action! Dolly is not content to watch “the parade pass by.”  She understands that if you want to get something done –  if you want something in your life — you need to make it happen! Dolly goes out there and makes things happen! She is relentless and resourceful. She is also flexible enough to change course when needed without skipping a beat.  She doesn’t get discouraged when the original plan doesn’t go perfectly.
  3. Bring others along with you! All the while helping herself to the  life she wants, Dolly is always helping others get what they want, too.  She sees the potential in everyone to reach their dreams and is the ultimate encourager! She sets the example herself with her own actions and others become inspired, as well. She follows the advice we always hear — put your own oxygen mask on first — take care of yourself first so that you can then take care of others.  A truly inspirational life.

As a coach, I help my clients to clarify what they want in their lives — personally, spiritually and in business. I help my clients to find their “Dolly” like strength and fearlessness within. Together we make a plan of action to achieve their goals and dreams. I am lucky enough to be able to watch their dreams unfold before them!

Coaching questions:

  1. Where in your life do you believe you are living beneath your full potential? How would your life be different if you were?
  2. What actions, small or large, can you start taking today to move in that direction?
  3. Who else can you bring along with you? What natural abilities do you have that could help someone else achieve their greatest desires?

Have fun with this!
